Notes- MLK, Jr. and nonviolence (has links to several YouTube videos, including his "I Have a Dream" speech)
Civil Rights Leader Baseball Card- we went to the library and researched a specific civil rights leader and you created a baseball card about your assigned leader. Baseball cards are due next class, it will be used to do an activity in class.
Worked on C level tasks and completed oral defenses.

Welcome to my blog for 20th Century Studies II. I update my blog after each class. My goals are to have students use this site to find out what they missed when absent and to let you know what we are doing in class.

2nd Semester is almost over. Communicating with you is also very important. Please make sure that I know the best way to communicate with you. We are just finishing our unit on the 80s and 90s- Passage to a New Century.

All missing work for the last six weeks is due by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10th.

Starting with our unit on The Cold War I will begin using the Layered Learning style of curriculum. Students will be given a list of tasks and then will choose which tasks they wish to complete. There are 3 levels- C, B, and A. All "C" level tasks must be completed before moving onto the "B" level, which must be completed before moving onto the "A" level. Please read Layered Curriculum Basics for a more detailed explanation.

For those of you who use the In Touch system to track grades I'm trying to make it easier for you to see what has been turned in and what is missing. A 'R' means that they have turned it in and a '*' means it is missing. There are no points possible for each individual task since I need to wait until the completion of the unit to compute the unit grade. If you have any questions please let me know.

Essay Contest

“Why Should We Remember Pearl Harbor?” 2011 Student Essay Contest Theme

2011 marks the 70th anniversary of America’s entry into WWII. Throughout this year, The National WWII Museum will be exploring how and why the United States went to war in December 1941. For this year’s High School Essay Contest, The National WWII Museum is asking students to tell us if they think it is important for us to “Remember Pearl Harbor.” And, if so, why and how should we remember it?

As in years past, the Museum does not want research papers. Students’ essays will be judged foremost for their originality, clarity of expression, and adherence to contest theme, as well as their historical accuracy, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. WWII Museum staff will read and evaluate entries.

This year the Museum is adding a Middle School Essay Contest. Students in grades 5-8 are asked the same question, but in a shorter format. Essays will be judged and compared by grade. All essays must be submitted through the Museum Essay Contest web page. No essays will be accepted through the mail.

AWARDS:
High School Essay Contest: First place winner will receive $1,000; second place winner will receive $750; and third place winner will receive $500. Winning essays will be posted on our website.

Middle School Essay Contest: One first place winner from each grade will receive $250. Winning essays will be posted on our website.

DEADLINE: Submission deadline for both contests is March 31, 2011, or when 500 entries have been received in each division.
